Avoiding Discomfort When Chartering a Sailing Vacation

Fear of motion sickness, which is an imbalance between what you perceive and the sense of movement you feel, causes some people to fear sailing. But motion sickness is much more rare than imagined and its three common ailments (nausea, fatigue, and dizziness) can easily be treated. Prepare in advance for a possible bout with mild motion sickness before you set sail on your yachting vacation and you’ll likely feel no ill effects at all.

Being prepared for motion sickness is simple and can help to ensure a happy sailing adventure. Treatments include:

  • eating before travel
  • focusing on the horizon or a distant point
  • drinking plenty of liquids, especially club soda
  • sitting outside the boat and facing forward
  • taking a nap
  • chewing gum
  • taking a simple over-the-counter medication such as Dramamine
  • herbal therapy such as golden root

If you’re concerned these treatments won’t work for you, or if you have suffered from motion sickness in the past, there are prescription medications available. Check with your doctor when planning your trip so you don’t miss out on your dream of a sailing yacht vacation!

Another common ailment travellers fear they may face is anxiety in a space, commonly known as claustrophobia. If you’ve been known to have such feelings before, ask your doctor for medication prior to chartering the yacht for your sailing vacation. A simple prescription can help you to remain calm and unconcerned about the small spaces you may encounter on the yacht.

If you arrive on board and become ill, there’s no need to worry. Captain Terry will make sure you’re as comfortable as possible, and if necessary, will transport you to one of the islands for your comfort. Either way, know that you’re in good hands and you’ll receive the ultimate care from Captain Terry and the crew of Manana Maybe!
