When sailing in the BVI, you will often hear the term “Sir Francis Drake Channel.” This large body of water is located between the British Virgin Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands and is seeped in history.
Francis Drake towered above all of the sailors of his day. A brilliant seaman, he was ambitious , brave and ruthless in piracy and war. For this, the “Sir Francis Drake Channel” was named for him.
After a brutal battle with the Spanish in San Juan, Porto Rica Francis Drake became England’s most successful pirate. He raided numerous Spanish cargos of spice, gold and silver.
At the end of 1577, Drake and his crew became the first Englishmen to sail around the world. He brought home enough treasure to pay off the entire national debt and was promptly knighted by Queen Elizabeth.
In 1585 Sir Francis Drake was commissioned by the Queen to raid the Spanish settlements in the Caribbean and completed this mission by capturing and sinking over 24 ships.
The Spanish named him “El Draque” (dragon) and Prince Phillip II offered 4,000,000 pounds for his head.
When on your Caribbean sailing vacation in the BVI with Captain Terry on Manana Maybe, you are traveling the same course as Sir Francis Drake. Perhaps on a dark, starry night, while sitting on the deck you can feel the ghost of one of the most famous Pirates of the Caribbean.

Thinking of the ultimate sailing vacation? Think SailWithTerry. The British Virgin Islands is known as the “sailing capital of the world”. Balmy trade winds, crystal clear turquoise water, numerous picturesque islands within 1-2 hours sailing distance and… FULL MOON PARTIES.
Each month around the date of the full moon , the party fever ratchets up a few notches. There is a buzz in the air as sailboats converge to Trellis Bay. Located at the east end of Tortola in the BVI, Trellis Bay is world renown for its island flavor and full moon parties complete with fireballs and moko jumbies.
Early arrivals quickly grab a mooring ball in the anchorage and then sit back with a cool beverage watching as the other boats arrive. Shouts of welcome and reggae music drift over the water. The excitement builds as the sun sets. As the sun sets, everyone jumps in the dingy for a short ride to the dock. The air is festive, food and drinks abound, island music intensifies.
It is Full Moon time! It is Party Time! As the moon rises in the starlit skies the party shifts into full gear. Steel drums beat the island sounds, Moko Jumbies jump out and start the dancing, fire balls are lighted and cheers go up at the spectacular sights. The party goes on until the wee hours, after all it is only a dingy ride back to your floating hotel….. . The 51’ sailboat, Manana Maybe.
A Caribbean sailing charter with Captain Terry is the ultimate sailing vacation. Visit sailwithterry.com and secure your next Full Moon party date. Remember the party is only once a month so check the dates on the web page to reserve your vacation.

What a great pleasure it was to have two Viking families, from Norway, take a sailing vacation with us in 2009. And they did come back and sail with us again in 2010.
Dear Terry,
We are now back in Oslo, Norway, sorting out all the nice photos, video clips and good memories from a fantastic week sailing with you in the B.V.I.
My friend Knut and my self wanted to take our teen age kids on a special sailing vacation. We each have two kids ages13-16 and each of us have a son and daughter. We wanted to have a nice mix of good sailing, snorkeling, diving, relaxing in the sun, experiencing the Virgin Islands and have a nice warm week during the middle of a cold Norwegian winter. Yes, that is what we got and snow birds can come all the way from Norway! Why not Sail With Terry?
There is no lack of options, companies and boats to charter in the B.V.I. The challenge is to pick the right one. I did quite a bit of research before we decided to go with you. Key reasons were your experience, your flexibility in accommodating our wishes, but also your boat as to number of beds and space on board. We wanted our kids and ourselves to learn the basics of sailing, handling the boat, respect for wind and weather as well as just having a nice holiday. You engaged the kids in a very nice and positive way that really triggered their interest for sailing.
We chose the option with you as captain, the reason being that I was the only person in our group with good sailing experience. Personally I’d recommend others to have you as a Captain even if they are good sailors. Apart from knowing the boat as well as the islands and harbors you know all the good snorkeling spots, have the connections to arrange diving when we wanted, knew when we had to be at the next place in order to get a good mooring etc. It made the sailing vacation very relaxing and great fun.
In total, Terry, it was so nice spending one week with you on your boat and we will do it again!
Best regards,
Erik Wiese-Hansen
Oslo-Norway

Before you go snorkeling on your BVI Sailing Vacation with SailWithTerry– make sure to put sunscreen on your back and the back of your legs. I always wear a t-shirt for protection from the sun. If you put sunscreen on your face or on your feet, it will burn in your eyes and will deteriorate your mask and your fins. Before trying on your fins, wet them and your feet to make it easier. Always wear fins, you never know when you need extra power. Test your mask for leaks and the fit of your fins close to the “Mañana Maybe”, your 51-foot sailing vessel. We strongly suggest you never snorkel alone and that you take your time. Always snorkel with someone close by your side. Taking your time will deliver the best snorkeling experience. Most of the fish are shy and hide first if you approach a coral head. If you hover for a minute on top of this coral head you will see them reappear. A reef is like a painting- the longer you look at it the more details you will explore. If you have an underwater camera, take it with you every time. You never know when you make your picture perfect encounter with you favorite fish or turtle. Disposable cameras without flash only take satisfying pictures in good light conditions and if you are very close to the object.
A special word about Coral reefs they take millenniums to grow, seconds to destroy.
The coral reefs are precious and delicate. We encourage our guest to touch nothing.
The slightest touch with hands, fins or equipment can irreparably damage coral polyps, the tiny animals that build the coral reefs. Remember most coral reefs grow only half an inch per year. We want all guests on a Caribbean sailing vacation with SailWithTerry to enjoy the beauty of these coral gardens. When snorkeling, remain horizontal in the water and snorkel in water with five to seven feet of clearance. Snorkeling on shallow reefs can easily inflict damage to the coral and cause personal injury. In a vertical position your flapping fins are killers. They break coral and stir up sediment that can smother the coral polyps. For equipment adjustment, swim out and away from the coral into deep water, then make the adjustments. Look, enjoy and take nothing dead or alive from the reef.
The BVI has some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean, and a sailing vacation with Captain Terry is a great way to experience these beauties first hand. Log on to our website for information on how to schedule your own incredible sailing trip with a world renown Captain and vessel.
