Greetings from Captain Terry at the Helm of Mañana Maybe

Greeting to friends present and future,

The 2010-2011 season is in full swing in the BVI.  Boats flying flags from all corners of the world.  Small boats, big boats, mega yachts and last week a 400’ super yacht. (go to google and type in super yacht “A”)  Evenings in an anchorage is truly an international experience as greetings in Italian, French, German, Norwegian and English are exchanged.

Life continues to be filled with blessings.  Mañana Maybe is a faithful and reliable vessel.  Charter guests have made each sailing trip exciting and memorable and of course new friendships have been forged.

News of snow, cold frigid weather  seem vague as we greet each day with a balmy breeze, blue skies and warm, turquoise water. Thats what sailing vacations are all about.

Life in the islands is gentle.  The Wanderlust on the water is shared and there is always an instant bond with fellow sailors.  Lives cross daily as sailors stop at local marinas on journeys to near by  islands or to exotic destinations far away.  Everyone has a story and is looking toward the next adventure.

I, along with my first mate Ingrid ,are planning to expand our horizons.  We will be offering a choice of new sailing destinations in various sailing vessels.  We have had numerous  repeat guests and the questions has come up “where else can we sail with you?”

Perhaps you have been thinking of  trying out sailing on a large catamaran. We are looking at sailing vacations in the Fiji Islands, The Greek Islands, Gulf of Thailand, Sea of Cortez and others.  These sailing vacations can be combined with land based travel.

At this time we are researching and studying various locations.  If you have a special sailing vacation in your bucket list let us know and perhaps we can make these dreams come true.

Caribbean Sailing Vacations – Sailing for the Full Moon

Feb 24, 2011

World Famous Full Moon Parties

The British Virgin Islands are world renown for “Sailing Vacations”.  Sunny skies, crystal clear turquoise water,  numerous interesting islands,  private coves, beaches and consistent trade winds  make the BVI the ultimate destination for chartering a sailboat.

Spend a day on the 51’ Mañana Maybe sailing Drake’s Channel, snorkeling natures aquariums, diving long buried ship wrecks. As evening approaches there is excitement in the air.  It is Full Moon Party Time!

Tortola has two hot spots where you can dance all night and howl at the moon.  On the west end of the island is the Bomba Shack.  This location is just a shack on the beach but wow! what a party.  Locals and guests come from everywhere to worship the full moon and attend this legendary party.  Local music and lots of mushroom tea will make this a memorable event.

At the east end of Tortola at Trellis Bay there is also a party starting. The anchorage at Trellis Bay fills up the day before and the party starts.  As the evening of the full moon party approaches, the sound of dinghy’s cutting across the water can be heard amidst the music and laughter.

The full moon party at Trellis Bay usually starts around 7:00 with a West Indian Buffet, and lots of adult beverages, Live fungi music, fire jugglers, pottery firings, are all part of the festivities.  As the moon rises so does the tempo of the music and soon the Mocko Jumbies  (natives on stilts) can be seen approaching.    It is dark now, everyone is dancing and then the most dramatic event occurs.  Huge metal sculptures loaded with fire wood are ignited on the beach.  The party goes on to the wee hours of the morning.  Luckily there are huge hammocks for those who  decide to sleep on the beach.

As the dinghy’s depart to go to their sailboats,  the glow of the fire balls can be seen , the moon is high in the sky and  there is a feeling of peace.  All is well.  Another moon.  Another month.

Visit sailwithterry.com and schedule your sailing vacation in the Caribbean around the full moon.  This is a party you will remember for the rest o of your life.  Captain Terry will help you plan this memorable vacation trip.  Contact the Captain at sailwithterry@gmail.com .

Sailing Vacation – Norman, Peter, Cooper

Feb 05, 2011

What do these three names have in common with a Sailing Vacation in the Caribbean?

When you book a sailing vacation in the British Virgin Islands, most of the sailing charters leave from the island of Tortola. The BVI is considered the sailing capital of the world and there are hundreds of charter sailboats based in Tortola.

When you charter a sailing vacation on the 51’ sailboat Mañana Maybe, the experienced Captain Terry will welcome you aboard your floating hotel, give you a brief tour of your home for the next week, and discuss the weeks agenda according to your preferences.

There are many islands and cays in the BVI. So many different things to do. So much to experience.

Upon leaving the dock in Tortilla, sails are hoisted and your dream journey begins. Relax, sit back, soak up the sun. Your first nights destination will be NORMAN ISLAND.

Norman island is often referred to as Treasure island by the locals and is reputed to still have buried pirate treasures. We enter a large protected cay called the Bight where we anchor for the night. A short dingy ride or swim to the island and “Pirates” a beach bar serving the famous island drink “painkillers”, sand in your toes , warm sunshine, and YOU are on your Sailing Vacation. Norman Island also is great for hiking and the views are breath taking so don’t forget your camera. Dingy around the corner and you can snorkel the famous caves.

Your next island is PETER ISLAND, a well protected anchorage and a great place to just jump off the back of the boat with your snorkel. Often a friendly turtle will come by to check you out. Dinner and happy hour on Peter island is a great way to meet other sailors from around the world. Or perhaps that night you might choose to have a starlit dinner on the deck of Mañana Maybe and finish off the evening with a cocktail watching for falling stars.

COOPER ISLAND is the third island is this chain and is a great place for an overnight anchorage. The island has a beautiful sandy beach fringed with palm trees. There is a cozy seating area for Happy Hour and the dining room has been totally rebuilt. Dinners are excellent and there is always a fun, Caribbean ambience.

Visit SailWithTerry and check out the numerous visitors that have made this sailing vacation the trip of a lifetime. Email or phone Captain Terry and let him help you plan the perfect sailing vacation.

Sailing Vacation – Dogs, Indians, Monkey

Jan 27, 2011

Who are these guys and what do they have in common with my sailing vacation?

A recent  sail boat charter to the British Virgin Islands was a warm respite from the frigid, icy, and snowy weather in Georgia.

An easy flight to San Juan Puerto Rico, a scenic ride on a commuter plane to Tortola, and it was time to shuck the gloves, hat, and boots.   Shorts, flip flops and a tropical drink in my hand.  This transition was easy.

Sailing in the Caribbean visiting a different island each day.  So many beaches, so many fun places to party, so little time.

The water was turquoise blue,  so clear that you could see the sandy bottom along with turtles and numerous colorful exotic fish.  Mild winds, calm ocean, sunny skies… perfect time to snorkel.

The BVI is world renowned for its numerous dive locations including the famous wreck of the Rhone and multiple cave sites.

For those of us that love to just jump off the back of the boat with a snorkel and mask, you cannot find a location that is more “snorkel friendly” .  There is usually a turtle swimming by, tons of angel fish, parrot fish, grouper…

There are so many great walls, caves, and reefs you could snorkel every day and still not see everything.

The most famous snorkel spots in the BVI are:  The Dogs, The Indians and Monkey Point.  These locations are within easy sailing distance of each other and they each have distinct characteristics.   Beautiful coral abounds with so many tropical fish.  You can swim along with the fish, pass through a short tunnel or even dive down and check out what is lurking under the coral.  All this exciting marine life at your fingertips as you are swimming   in the midst of so much beauty.   Even the inexperienced snorkeler can feel comfortable as you glide through nature’s aquarium.

Visit sailwithterry.com and check out the pictures and video of exciting underwater photography.  Book your sailing vacation with SailwithTerry and visit the Dogs, Monkeys, and Indians.

Holiday Greetings To All

Dec 24, 2010

Another wonderful sailing year is ending and a new year is just around the corner.  The holiday spirit in the British Virgin Islands  is  everywhere.   Balmy breezes, blue skies, red ribbons, live Christmas trees.  Anticipation is in the air.  Family time, presents, a beautiful holy birth, thankful for so many blessings.

In Dahlonega, Georgia, a white Christmas is predicted.  Sleds, gloves, blazing fireplace.   Lights twinkle in the trees and Santa Clause is visiting the square in his sled for the perfect picture.

Two different worlds but everyone is focused on the Holy Event .  People shopping  with smiles and greetings of ”Merry Christmas” everywhere.   A time to renew friendships and gathering family closer.

We have had a wonderful year spending time in the islands with many new friends from all over the world and also enjoying time in Dahlonega.  Beautiful sunsets, overlooking the mountains and sunsets on the horizon in the Caribbean.

Ingrid and I want to wish everyone a very special Christmas season and the best New Year ever.

We are ever so thankful for all of our friends throughout the world and the great family that we are blessed with.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year,

Captain Terry and  First mate,  Ingrid
