Planning Sailing Charters, Things to Consider

Oct 30, 2010

When you are thinking of hiring a sailing charter, there are several things that you need to keep in mind.

Angie from Maine Waves Hello

There are several types of sailing holidays that you can take and the way that you approach the planning can influence how great those holidays actually are. Obviously you will plan girlfriend getaways differently than you would a honeymoon sailing vacation. You can sail away for a tour of the British Virgin Islands to celebrate a life event like an anniversary or a birthday, or you can do it to celebrate an accomplished goal of any kind.

What Kind of Sailing Are You Used To or Expecting?

Whether you are new to sailing or you are an experienced sailor who only likes a certain kind of vessel, it is important to know what size boat you will be on. You might also like to see some pictures so that you know what to expect before you head for the dock.

What Kind of Sailing Vacation Are You Talking About?

Obviously you will plan different types of activities for different vacations. You might need a larger sailing charter if you are talking about girlfriend getaways with six or seven women for the weekend or a smaller charter if you are planning an intimate and very romantic honeymoon. You might want to bring your girlfriends on the same yacht that you and your honey sailed on a few months before. You can create different memories in the same setting if you have different people, after all.

What Are the Pricing Plans for the Sailing Charter that You Are Interested In?

Every sailing charter will let you sail away for a different rate; it usually depends on a number of factors. There are shared charters starting at $750 per week per person based double occupancy to thousands of dollars a day on a Mega yacht. Most sailing charters are between $1,000 to $3,000 per week per person depending how inclusive the service requested.

What Should You Pack for a Sailing Charter?

What you plan to bring along with you for your sailing adventures may depend on who you are going with and what you plan to do. If you are going to be stopping at different ports in the British Virgin Islands, then you might need outfits for shopping or sightseeing or even for dancing the night away there. If you are going to sail the seas and not stop anywhere, then you will need to pack far less. For a girlfriend getaway, you might only need casual clothes, maybe a bathing suit and, of course, your most fabulous accessories so that you can compare and giggle with one another.

The rule to remember is to bring half as much as you originally pack and twice as much cash as you planed. Some places don’t take credit cards or have $25-$30 minimums.

What is the Advantage of a Sailing Vacation?

When you sail, you are out on the water, being one with the sea. The sky stretches out above you like a jewel and the water beneath you reflects your smiling face. Throughout all time, men have taken to the water to make a living, to find new lands and for the sheer thrill of being on the untamed waves. It is your turn to sail away.

British Virgin Island Sailing Adventures

Adventures are a part of any good and memorable vacation, and when you visit the British Virgin Islands, there’s no shortage of sailing adventures and excursions for you and your family to enjoy, especially if you’re interested in the past.

The British Virgin Islands are teeming with history, a history that spans hundreds of years and includes famous names like Blackbeard the pirate and author Robert Louis Stevenson.

Norman Island is home to one the adventurous locations. This 2.5-mile long island located on the border of BVI and the U.S. Virgin Islands and is the home of The Caves, the reputed inspiration behind the much-loved Robert Louis Stevenson classic, “Treasure Island.”

The Caves are located at the base of the cliffs at Treasure Point at the southern end of The Bight on Norman Island. They are accessible to people in boats or those that want to snorkel, allowing families two ways to experience these beautiful, remote locations.

As soon as you enter their depths, it’s not hard to see why they are a source of inspiration or why pirates may have stored their treasure within them. Who knows, maybe some lucky, unsuspecting soul will find some long-forgotten treasure.

In your quest to create the perfect sailing adventures, one should also visit Soper’s Hole, another interesting location for fans of pirate lore. It is believed that in the 1700s, Blackbeard the pirate once lived on the spot where Pusser’s Landing is now located.

If your family is interested in sunken wrecks, and swimming through their coral-encrusted bodies, you could stop by the wreckage of the Royal Mail Steamship Rhone, which was featured in the 1977 film The Deep. The Rhone sank off the coast of Salt Island on October 29, 1867, when it was buffeted by a hurricane.

As you can see, sailing adventures abound in the BVI and are just waiting for you to take part.

BVI Vacation | The sailing season for Sailwithterry has started off with a bang!!

A wonderful  family from California  joined us on Mañana Maybe in time for an unforgettable New years celebration.    We were all invited to a party in the home of one of the residents on the island of Great Camono.

New Years Eve day we sailed to  Marina Cay and  easily picked up a mooring .  Cocktails at sunset and then a short boat ride to a private dock.   We then  boarded a  truck with benches and proceeded to go up and up and around a mountain on a one lane road.  At the   top we entered the home of our hosts and were speechless at the 360 degree views.

The party was  attended by guests from all over the  world, including a renowned harp player, a couple that had sailed around the world, and a lovely lady that was a fly fishing guide in the islands.  Just prior to midnight we gathered on the terrace for champagne , the count down and a beautiful view of the water, islands, and fireworks below .

A sleepy, happy group rode back to Manana Maybe and all agreed this was the most  awesome and memorable  evening ever.  Welcome 2010!sailing vacation

The remainder  of the trip was filled with great sailing winds, some still days where the water was like glass which made for extra clear  and colorful snorkeling,  an anchorage at Leverick Bay  for shopping, happy hour , a pig barbecue and live entertainment.  The next day we taxied to the Baths, a huge cave created by volcanic boulders.

The Baths are a must see in the BVI, even saw Kelly Ripa (Regis and Kelly fame) and her family.

Adventure sailing kicks your pleasure up a notch by including such activities as swimming, kayaking, scuba diving, hiking and snorkeling.

Adventure sailing is a great way to spend a family vacation. You may want to include several generations. Even though older adults may not want to take part in the most adventurous activities, there are still lots of things that can be enjoyed by everyone–young and old.

While those who crave the highest adventure may be interested in deep sea diving or parasailing, the youngest and oldest family members may prefer fly-fishing, building sand castles on the beach or swimming. Whatever you think an adventure is, adventure sailing will ensure you find it.

An adventure sailing vacation provides more for the whole family than many other vacation options because it provides what’s really important … time together. Rather than a resort or theme park that provides different activities for different ages, sending everyone in different directions, an adventure sailing vacation brings the family together with lots of onboard activity. Your family can spend time basking in the sun, laughing together, even anchoring and trimming the sails while enjoying old-fashioned quality time with one another.

When you choose adventure sailing for your vacation, there’s no doubt it will be a trip you’ll remember for a lifetime. Enjoy the ocean, find all the adventure you can possibly imagine, and spend time with those you love. What could be better than that?
