Sailing Vacation – Adventure Sailing Vacations

April 29, 2012

A sailing vacation in the Virgin Islands can fulfill anyone’s search for adventure and learning new skills.  Sailing, wreck diving, snorkeling caves, kit sailing, kayaking secret lagoons, paddle boarding, bone fishing, deep sea fishing and the list goes on.

Caribbean Sailing

Caribbean Sailing Vacation

A great way to experience a multitude of activities without crowds, driving in foreign countries, and changing hotels is to charter a sail boat in the Caribbean.  The  British Virgin Islands are easily accessible, the locals speak English, the currency is  U.S. dollars and crime is almost nonexistent.  The  economy thrives on tourism and so the  locals take this business very serious.

An easy flight to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, a short  ride on a huge ferry to Tortilla BVI and the excitement begins.

Charter a sailboat from a reputable, professional broker who will advise you as to appropriate size and type of boat  for your party, an amiable, knowledgeable captain and a renowned gourmet chef that will design a menu to fit your pallet.

SailwithTerry Ltd has been my choice for many such vacations and each charter has been beyond my expectations.  Just to have a ”go to” person in the event that there is a situation  gives great pace of mind when traveling to a foreign country.

The Virgin Islands are comprised of over 60 islands and cays to visit.  You can spend the night in a quiet, secluded cove and enjoy  a special entree prepared by your personal chef under a canopy of brilliant stars or you can sit in an anchorage where the party never stops.  In the morning you jump overboard into the clear turquoise water with your snorkel gear and swim with  a turtle that has just stopped by to check you out.

Local dive boats or fishing boats will come to your charter boat anchorage and pick you up for a day of diving the RS Rhone or perhaps trying your hand at bone fishing or fly fishing for tarpon at Anegada.

Sail into North Sound and sign up for a day of kite sailing or board paddling or perhaps rent a kayak and explore the marshes.  That night you can dingy from your floating hotel and join in the full moon party and dance with the mucko jumbies.

Each day YOU decide your agenda, your adventure.  There are also wonderful hiking trails that will lead you to mountain high vistas to view the expanse of the Caribbean and the photo opportunities are unlimited.  Hike around Norman Island and finish off the day with a painkiller at the bar and meet world cruiser that have tales to share.

Sailing Vacations – Fantasy Valentine Vacation, Part 5

Feb 17, 2012

My Fantasy Sailing Vacation continues in the warm, sunny Caribbean. We have our own floating hotel, a 44’ luxury catamaran, named “Mardi Gras”, as we explore the islands of the British Virgin Islands.

Fantasy Sailing Vacations

Fantasy Sailing Vacations

Morning arrives at Norman Island. Soft lapping of waves on the boat, gently rocking as others cruiser prepare to cast off. Sea gulls diving for their sushi breakfast. I follow the aroma of coffee and there on the deck the table is set with flowers, fresh fruit, croissant’s, a beautiful vegetable frittata and of course mimosas. Hugo is discussing the next destination with Jeffery as Heidi serves our delicious breakfast.

Todays final sailing destination is Scrub Island. First we dinghy over to the Indians, a renowned snorkeling location. The Indians consist of a large rock formation and as we swim around and through the tunnels we are amazed at the beauty of the coral and the hundreds of colorful tropical fish. Jeffery has accompanied us and is causing a feeding frenzy with his bread crumbs. Blue Tangs, Queen Angels, Parrot Fish, Trigger fish, Sargent Majors, Blue Damsels, Butterfly fish……. I feel like we are in the Georgia Aquarium

Returning to “Mardi Gras” we prepare to set sail with Hugo assisting and working on his sailing skills. I decide to find a chaise lounge on the sun deck to work on my tan and read my favorite novel. Sailing is so peaceful, no sound or smell of engines just wind in the sails and the sound of Adele singing through the sound system.

I awaken to the sound of voices as we are entering the harbor. Looking up at a mountain top I see the beautiful resort of Scrub Island. This is the first new resort built in over 30 years in the BVI and expense has not been spared. Heidi has already made an appointment for Hugo and I to be pampered and have a couples spa treatment.

The beautifully appointed spa is open air and we are surrounded by views of the sparking Caribbean. Two trained therapist apply a soothing hot stone treatment and a Chocolate facial. Birds chirp in the beautiful floral trees, blue skies and the temperature is 84 degrees. A champagne lunch is served on the terrace where we can see for miles and miles.

A return to our yacht and Jeffery tosses our rafts into the water for an afternoon of total relaxation. Hey, is that a turtle that just swam by to say hello?

Tonight we will dine at the resort at the renowned Caravela Restaurant. My shopping in St. Thomas comes in handy as I wear my new sun dress to compliment my golden tan. Cocktails in the lively bar and then a romantic dinner of lobster bisque, chateaubriand and chocolate shuffle complete with wine parings from the extensive international wine selection.

Caribbean Sailing charters offer the best of all worlds. Fine dining, beach bar hoping, diving, snorkeling, exploring and hiking all at your convince.

Let the friendly, experienced team at SailwithTerry Charters plan your custom Fantasy Caribbean Sailing Vacations. One call and we will fill your dreams and fit your budget.

Fantasy Valentine Sailing Vacation

Feb 7, 2012

Hugo continues to shower me with surprises and as my Fantasy Valentine Vacation continues in the Virgin Islands.

Fantasy Valentine Sailing Vacation

Fantasy Valentine Sailing Vacation

I awaken to the sun streaming into our room as there is knock on the door. Breakfast! The waiter sets the table on the balcony overlooking the huge Charlotte Amaile harbor. The turquoise water sparkles with diamonds in the bright sun and the skies are bright blue with not a cloud in sight. We are sitting on top of a mountain and literally have a birds eye view.

The leisurely breakfast consists of mimosas, buttery croissants and a delicious frittata, accommodated by fresh local fruit.

Soon we are on our way on our next destination. A short taxied ride down and around the mountain and we are at Red Hook for our ferry ride to Road Town Tortola. Speedy’s Ferry is huge and speedy and of course we sit upstairs where the wind is in our hair and we can absorb the rays. The views are spectacular, we pass St. John and the multiple islands of the British Virgins. The wind is consistent and sailboats are all around us going and coming to new adventures.

After a forty-five minute trip we arrive in Road Town and now Hugo has informed me that we will be chartering a catamaran to sail the British Virgin Islands. The marina is huge and there are literally hundreds of boats bobbing at the docks. Monohulls, catamarans, small and huge. What am I in for now?

A pretty young lady comes out and introduces herself,  Sarah works for the charter boat company will be showing us to our boat.Yes, she explains, Hugo has charted a crewed catamaran complete with gourmet chef. We approach a large beautiful boat and a smiling couple greet us. Heidi and Jeffery will be our crew and will be taking care of us for the next 7 days.

A quick tour of our floating hotel and I am in awe! The lower deck has a beautiful siting and lounging area, great for all of the el fresco meals. The galley and salon are most impressive. Beautiful wood, while leather cushions stainless steel appliance, flat screen TV and sound system. The living area is roomy and inviting. Next we enter our sleeping quarters. A queen size bed, large bath with a double shower. I had no idea that a boat could be so spacious, more like a luxury condo.

We quickly store our baggage and go back up to the deck where Heidi has prepared cool beverages for us and a light lunch. Jeffery explains that we will have a short briefing about boat safety and they we will discuss our agenda for the week. I am so excited, nervous and yes a little scared. After all I am a mountain girl and this is a new experience. A luxury boat with a friendly crew and Hugo by my side. Bring on the fantasy sailing vacation.

Sailing Vacations – Fantasy Valentine Vacations…more

Jan 28, 2012

“My Fantasy Valentine Vacation continues. We have arrived in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands and since this is truly a surprise getaway, I had to do some serious shopping . Leaving Atlanta at 32 degrees and arriving in paradise at 82 degrees requires some major wardrobe adjustments.

Fantasy Sailing Vacations

Fantasy Sailing Vacations

Well now I know what it feels like to “shop till you drop”. Laden with numerous bags, Hugo summoned a taxi for our ride to my next surprise. Walter was our driver and boy was he entertaining. When he found out this was a surprise fantasy vacation he stepped into high gear. The roads in St. Thomas are narrow, designed for one vehicle but that does not stop anyone from speeding. Besides being narrow, the roads go straight up the mountainside with a minimum of switch backs and the only thing that you see is a steep drop off and miles and miles of beautiful aqua Caribbean Ocean dotted with hundreds of miniature sailboats. Of course Walter was as cool as could be and did not see me duck on the floor board as a truck approached our path, I forgot that the cars drive on the opposite side of the road as we do in the US. (British influence)

We passed colorful houses clinging to the hillsides, tropical flowers everywhere and lush green mountainsides. Finally we pulled over in front of a small boutique hotel, The Mafolie. The proprietor, Bob, came out to greet us and escorted us to the most charming room that I have ever seen. King size bed, large paddle fan, and the view was just breathtaking. Being on top of the mountains we were able to see several of the other islands and the activity on the harbor with huge cruise ships coming and leaving.

A quick change of clothes and Hugo and I decided to go for a swim. A cool cocktail from the Tiki bar, a comfortable lounge chair, and we soon dozed off while soaking up some warm sunshine. It is hard to believe that this morning we were braving cold wind and icy rain as we drove to the airport in Atlanta.

Evening was approaching so Hugo informed me to dress for dinner. The Mafolie Hotel is well known for its ambience and excellent cuisine. A martini at the bar where we met several visitors from Canada. The sunset was extraordinary and toasts were exchanged. Soon we were guided to our table. A million lights below from Charlotte Amalie and a million lights from heaven above. Our entrees were excellent and the wine was wonderful. Hugo had certainly planned the perfect fantasy vacation.

I sleepily asked Hugo if he had any special plans for tomorrow. Oh, yes! the vacation is just starting. Tomorrow we will board a large ferry boat and make our way to Tortola. I am too tired to ask what is a Tortola. Stay tuned as my fantasy Valentine vacation unfolds.”

Take a Sailing Vacation – Make it a Fantasy Vacations

Jan 28, 2012

Fantasy Sailing Vacation

Fantasy Sailing Vacation

Valentines Day is a great time to be creative and create your fantasy sailing vacation get-a-way. “Last year my husband took the plunge and he totally surprised me with a sailing trip in the US Virgins Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

My husband Hugo has never failed to amaze me how he is able to pull off the perfect get away without me ever have a clue as to the destination. This time I was given a heads up that we would be  leaving on Feb. 12th for a weeksʼ vacation. Period!! Where are we going? What to pack? I was advised to just be ready to leave on Friday morning!!!! I had no idea it would be the best vacation of my life and I have had some great vacations.

Well, girls like to be prepared so a makeup bag was essential and a few pieces of lingerie went into a weekend bag. There were no hints or clues so I had to sit back and just wait for the surprise. The big day arrived and we departed for the airport. A Bloody Mary in the Crown Room relaxed my nervous excitement and I decided that Hugo could take over. Soon we proceeded to the gate where a flight was getting ready to depart for St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Oh no! No bathing suit, no shorts, I had on my wool slacks and a sweater. What to do? Well at least Hugo had my passport!

The flight to St. Thomas was easy and the champagne was delightful. Warm balmy weather, blues skies and soft breezes we walked down the stairs of the plane to the airport reception area where we were greeted by smiling locals offering rum punch samples. I was beginning to like this vacation.

A short taxi ride along the Harbor of Charlotte Amalie, we viewed several huge cruise ships at the dock and sea planes landing on the bay. Lots of activity and excitement. The cars drive on the  opposite side of the street and we are seeing rush hour traffic in the islands. Our driver, Vern, was born in Nevis, but came to St. Thomas for economic opportunities over twenty years ago. Vern had a perpetual smile and continued to give tips for noted restaurants in the area. Suddenly Vern turned left and my mouth flew open. A street with shops as far as the eye could see and beyond. Did I see Jewelry? Perfume? Designer bags? Was I dreaming? No, Hugo informed me that we would now go shopping for my fantasy vacation wardrobe. Oh my, this was a fantasy and I was ready to start some serious shopping. Since the shops are all contiguous, my biggest challenge was which side of the street did I want to start? This is truly an amazing experience. The streets are closed to auto traffic and the shops are all offering specials. There is no duty on alcohol, perfume, jewelry so it is truly a shoppers heaven. In addition to the shops on the main street, there are numerous little alleys that offer art galleries, boutiques and restaurants with outdoor seating. Just the right place to take a break, enjoy a cool beverage and watch the bustling activity in the area . Over 4,000 cruise ship guests are here so the air is festive.

Stay tuned for a exciting taxi ride, a sunset, happy hour, a fabulous gourmet dinner and a ferry boat ride to remember.”

Sailing Vacations – Diving, Sailing Vacation

July 31, 2011

Sailing Vacations – Diving, Sailing Vacation

The Cajun boys, Jason, Jimmy and Andre continue their diving vacation on a 46’ live aboard enjoying the top diving sites in the British Virgin Islands.

Morning sun breaks over the distant mountain range and sprays its brilliant rays on the peaceful turquoise water of the Caribbean.   Pelicans are diving for their breakfast as we see the swirls of baitfish.  The aroma of coffee beckons and I am enjoying watching the morning unfold.  Soon André sleepily comes up on deck, sees the baitfish and the next moment he has put on fins and mask and is checking out all of the underwater activity.    Soon Andre resurfaces with a big smile,  he has just seen a group of sting ray, a large turtle, a school of blue tang.

After breakfast a dive boat from UBS divers approaches and Katie, our dive master greets us with a smile and helps us on the boat.  Captain Terry is going to join us so I know we will have an extra show.

Destination:  Painted Walls is a series of Technicolor box canyons located at the end tip of Dead Chest Island.  Swimming out to the sea, the visibility is over 100’.  Angel fish, queen triggerfish and chub all surround us.  Katie guides us to the first canon and then on to the main canon, soon we enter the sponge encrusted tunnel where the name is derived.  The walls are encrusted with brilliant colored sponges:  purple, orange, red, pinks, fluorescent yellow and oranges.  The beauty is breathtaking and photos cannot do it justice.  This is an image to be relived in our memory bank for years to come.

Soon our guide leads us to the mooring that is holding the dive boat and Captain Tony welcomes everyone aboard.  We share the excitement of all of the beautiful fish and coral that we have seen.  Captain Terry takes out his Tropical Fish Book and we excitingly identify the fish that we have seen. What a wonderful experience to share with my friends.

A nice leisure lunch and rest and we proceed to our next  dive spot.  Blonde Rock.  Blonde Rock is a natural magnet attracting all kinds of marine life: turtles, schools  of Jack, Cobia, barracuda and even an occasional shark. Twin fire coral encrusted peaks (the name blonde) rise from a plateau at 35-40 feet. There are several ledges sporting numerous schools of fish and  we proceed to the  amphitheater. Here we find glasseye snapper, graysby and large carbas. Captain Terry shines his light and we see a brilliant array of sponge , algae and coral.

We return to our sailboat, good byes to Katie, our pretty dive guide.  We sit on the deck of the boat,  enjoying an ice-cold local beer and  relive the amazing dive sites that we have visited in one day.   I am overwhelmed by the clarity of the water and the abundance of the marine life and brilliant colors.

We dingy ashore for a great dinner, good wine and meeting more fellow sailors.  Tomorrow we will sail to Cooper Island and explore another dive site.

As Jimmy, André and I sit under the endless starlight sky, we agree that this sailing vacation is a dream come true and will be a memory that we will hold dearly for the rest of our lives.  The camaraderie, the beautiful scenery and balmy weather, the  amazing dive sites and of course the security that Captain Terry  is showing us the best islands in the BVI and making sure that we do not get into trouble.  Life is good.

Sailing Vacations – Exploring Jost Van Dyke

July 5, 2011

The Sailing Vacation of the Adams family continue as their 44’ catamaran, “Sea Breeze” enters Great Harbor under the experienced guidance of Captain Terry.

Jost Van Dyke is a large, mountainous island that lies to the north of Tortola, named after a famous pirate.  Great Harbor is the main settlement and also an immigration port for entry to the BVI.

We decide to have lunch and explore this quaint settlement.  Quaint is an understatement.  Time has stood still and you get the feeling that nothing has changed in the last hundred years.   A small dirt path leads to the local grocery hut which has a small inventory, (I guess the supply boat has not been here this week) further down the trail we see small wooden houses with front porches.  Smiling faces greet us, several offer bakery items or ice for sale.

Lunch is at the famous “Foxy’s Bar”. We sit under a huge thatched roof and enjoy drinks from an open air bar served by a bar tender with a great sense of humor and lots of stories to tell. Memorabilia new, old and ancient is tacked on the ceiling.  A bra, a Florida State hat, a license plate from Alaska, lacy panties, and hundreds of business cards.  Juicy hamburgers, a bushwhacker and we are ready for a nap in the hammock that swings under the canopy of trees.

Our next stop on Jost Van Dyke is White Bay with is the westernmost harbor on the south side of the island.   A beautiful snowy white beach greets us as Captain Terry gingerly guides us through the narrow channel.  The beach is dotted with beach bars, each more primitive and bohemian than next.   This is the home of the world famous “Soggy Dollar Bar” and of course no sailing adventure is complete without a earned  Soggy Dollar Bar T shirt”.  To be eligible we have to jump over into the clear aqua Caribbean water and swim ashore.  Melody is the winner and we all arrive with smiles on our faces and wet dollar bills in our bathing suit pockets.

The Soggy Dollar Bar is surrounded by large lofty palm trees  that give shade to the numerous lounge chairs and tables.  The bar is filled with  music,  laughter and people from all over the world.  The large cruise ships ferry their guests over for the day to experience ”island life”. Shooters for all, dancing in the sand,  and “where are you from” is heard all around.

Sarah, John  and I decide this is a good time for some beach time.  We stroll the length of the beach and admire the sugary white sand and the clear water, spotting fish here and there.   A couple of lounge chairs and we sit back and enjoy the beauty  of the Caribbean.   A Sailing Vacations are not ALL about sailing

John has found a friend and they are off to try and learn the art of paddle boarding.  This sport is all the rage in the islands and John quickly maneuvers the board  into the waves while standing up and using a paddle to guide and propel the boat.

Blue skies, white beaches, warm gentle breezes and we watch our boat bobbing in the anchorage.  It is nice to know that a short dingy ride back to our floating hotel and a night under the stars awaits us. We wonder what adventure Captain Terry has in store for us tomorrow.

Caribbean Sailing Vacations – Agenda for Adventure

May11, 2011

Caribbean Sailing Vacations

“Last year our family took the most memorable vacation ever.  A week long sailing vacation in the British Virgin Islands.” -

Jim Adams

Our family consists of myself, my wife Sara, daughters Emily (21) and Melody (18) and son John (12.)  With different ages and interests it is sometimes hard to find the perfect vacation that will appeal to everyone.

Through a friend’s reference, we contacted Captain Terry, who is an experienced sailing captain with a very impressive resume.  Captain Terry listened to our requirements, made some suggestions and we reserved our week of family adventure. We agreed to charter a 44’ Catamaran that has 4 ample cabins each with a private bath, a large galley, and plenty of deck room for dining, sunning and lounging.

To involve everyone in the planning process we proceeded to compile our “to do” list and the excitement began to build.  Passports were checked to make sure they were current, a new camera for Emily’s birthday , shopping for bathing suits, new shorts,  colorful flip flops.  Our goal was that everyone would have one soft carry-on bag for mobility and easy storage on our sailing trip.  Lastly we began to compile our grocery list. We decided that breakfasts and lunch would be casual and we would have dinners on shore.  Groceries were selected on the internet from a local grocery store and then delivered to the boat prior to our arrival.

Finally after much anticipation, the day finally arrived for our departure.  We arrived in the British Virgin Islands at the Tortola airport and were immediacy amused by the goats grazing along the road side and chickens scurrying around.  Warm balmy breezes, blue skies, views of the turquoise Caribbean and the proverbial rum punch greeted our arrival. “Welcome to the Islands, Mon”.

A short cab ride to the Marina where Captain Terry greeted us with a big smile and welcomed us aboard for our Caribbean sailing adventure.  Everyone excitedly chose their cabin and returned on deck for an umbrella drink and a safety briefing prior to dropping the lines and departing for our first destination. As we pulled out of the Marina and hoisted the sails under the guidance of our Captain, there were nervous smiles on everyone ones face.   Yes, this was going to be a great sailing adventure.
