British Virgin Island – The Sailing Capital of the World

Oct 29 2010
The British Virgin Islands are the undisputed sailing capital of the world.  Consistent warm weather, constant trade winds, and over 60+ islands and cays  for anchorage within an 80 nautical kilometer radius make this the ideal sailing venue for the novice as well as the experienced sailor.  A sailing charter where you are always in site of a safe harbor.

Sailing charters begin the adventure in Tortola, the largest island in the British Virgin Islands and home to the capital, Road Town.  This destination is reached by a scenic ferry ride from St. Thomas or a bird’s eye view from the sky via Puerto Rico to the airport on Beef Island.

The British Virgin Islands are completely safe from any pirates other than those found in local bars and offering rowdy entertainment.

However, when sailing in the Drake Channel it is easy to envision the days of old when Christopher Columbus and his hardy crew sailed down the channel or the in infamous Blackbeard pillaged and plunderer the local inhabitants.

Once you board your floating hotel you will decide your destination.  Will you sail south to visit the islands of Norman and Peter?  Sail east

to the  magnificent  beauty of Virgin Gorda and the renowned Baths? Sail west to the quaint, laid back island of Josh Van Dyke with the famous Soggy Dollar Bar? Or sail north to the Drowned Island of Anegada for deserted beaches and a lobster feast?

An experienced captain will guide you to the safest anchorages and help you avoid the perils of running aground.  A good captain may take the helm after you have had a great night out dancing with the island Mucko Jumbies and enjoying the local beverages known as ‘painkillers’ or he may sit back and watch as you adjust those sails and put the rail in the water.  The comfort of knowing that you have someone to assist  if a tropical storms comes or to just guide you to that special snorkeling spot makes for a stress free vacation.

Partying: In the BVI, Virgin Islands are legendary for their good times and the continuous celebration of life usually includes all classes and races mixing as easily as the blender drinks do. You will find yourself partying with other yachters, local islanders, the rich and famous and backpackers.
If you like dancing barefoot in the sand to great recorded and live music, the island’s beach bars are for you. World famous beach bars include Foxy’s Tamarind Bar (Jost Van Dyke), Bomba’s Surfside Shack (Tortola) and the Schooner Willie T’s (Norman’s Island) and countless others.
