Sailing Vacations Photography

Recently my family and I were trying to find a vacation that would offer something for everyone.  Photography is my passion and I am always looking for new venues.  We searched the Internet and found Captain Terry at sailwithterry.com, a yacht broker who would be able to combine all of our interest’s while enjoying a fabulous family sailing vacation.

After stating our  goals and budget, Captain Terry secured a 50’ monohull sail boat, complete with four staterooms each offering a private bath, a well-appointed galley, and of course a knowledgeable, professional and friendly captain.

My husband Allen would be able to pursue his love of scuba diving, son Charles has already signed up for kite boarding lessons and Sally planned to perfect her knowledge of sailing.

Captain Terry, our broker explained the benefits of charting a floating hotel in the British Virgin Islands. Multiple mountainous islands dotting the ocean all within 2-4 hours of sailing, each island has a distinct different ambiance and amenities.

Local dive boats with certified scuba masters would pick Allen up right from out boat, take him to a different exciting location each day.  Charles would join his kite boarding instructors and become proficient at a new sport and of course Sally was in charge of assisting the captain as she honed her sailing skills.

I was in heaven. Spending time with my family in paradise with so many photo opportunities was a dream vacation for me.  The Caribbean sky is a brilliant blue, the water is multiple shades of turquoise and green and so clear that you can see the colorful tropical fish swim by.  I hiked up mountains to capture the expansive vista of the ocean, shot pictures of the beautiful flora and the quaint pastel houses clinging to the mountainsides.  Mornings in the anchorages were so peaceful and while I was watching the world wake up the pelicans came swooping in for their breakfast catch. Evening sunsets painted a different picture each day and numerous sailboats bobbing peacefully in the anchorage was picture postcard perfect. I was able to try out and experiment with my new lenses.  A special camera with waterproof housing gave me the opportunity to snorkel and take fantastic pictures of brilliant coral, schools of angel fish, blue damsels, turtles, a eagle ray and a school of small squid  I was like a kid in a candy store, each time I turned around there was a better photo op.

This was the perfect family vacation for us all.  We all pursued  our hobbies, enjoyed the bonding and camaraderie of sharing our interests and spending quality time together in paradise on a sailing vacation.

I would recommend this vacation to anyone.  No crowds, no set agenda, so many islands to see and explore and of course something for everyone, even  for those seeking to just lie on the bow of the boat catching rays and finding time to finally read that novel.

Contact Terry at SailWithTerry.com , let him know what type of vacation you are looking for  and he will find the right boat for your budget and your needs.  Captain Terry has sailed these waters for many years and has firsthand knowledge of boats, captains and of course all the islands and the best anchorages, restaurants, and secret snorkeling places.

It removes the stress and worry that you have when chartering a bareboat.   The captain knows the right anchorage and sailing options to go to in the event of swells from the north that can occur in the winter months when the sailing is at the optimum. A knowledgeable captain can guide you to the lesser known snorkeling spots, secluded beaches and of course the captain always knows where the best parties and restaurants are located.

Captain Terry  is experienced, very upbeat and patient.   He will personally guide you through the best snorkel spots and caves while pointing out exotic fish and coral.  A captain that you can trust…Captain Terry on Mañana Maybe.

Vacation dates for the 2010-2011 season are booking up fast.  Reserve your Caribbean sailing vacation now and when the cold winds blow and ice is everywhere,  you will be working on a tan in the BVI.

A Sailing Trip Like No Other

If you’re looking for the perfect sailing trip, a trip that creates memories to last a lifetime, then the British Virgin Islands is the destination for you.

Picture this… you’re sitting on the deck of a yacht at sunset with your loved one seated beside you. you’re anchored just off the shoreline of one of the many islands located in the BVI. You can see people milling about at a local restaurant on the nearby shore, but around you, the air is quiet and peaceful, creating the perfect romantic setting.

As you and your girlfriend sit, holding each other’s hands and watching the sun’s setting rays reflect off the water, you gently slip a ring onto your her finger as you ask for her hand in marriage.

Sounds beautiful, right? Well, this could happen!

If you’re planning a trip to the British Virgin Islands, and you want to make sure your sailing trip is special, and ends with a “yes,” there are certain places that you’ll want to visit that will leave you both breathless and feeling like you’re in another world, created especially for the two of you.

One such place is the beach at Monkey Point on Guana Island. It’s the perfect location for a romantic picnic for two, complete with cheese, crackers, fruit, chocolate and wine.

Afterwords, you could lay out on the white, sandy beach, soaking up the sun’s rays. Or you could take a swim in the water.

On a different day, you could spend time hiking together on the many trails that are found on the islands and trails that allow you to see the local wildlife, like flamingos or brown boobies.

These are just a couple of ideas that would help make a perfect sailing trip and lead to the perfect ending to a perfect vacation.

BVI Vacation | The sailing season for Sailwithterry has started off with a bang!!

A wonderful  family from California  joined us on Mañana Maybe in time for an unforgettable New years celebration.    We were all invited to a party in the home of one of the residents on the island of Great Camono.

sailing vacation

New Years Eve day we sailed to  Marina Cay and  easily picked up a mooring .  Cocktails at sunset and then a short boat ride to a private dock.   We then  boarded a  truck with benches and proceeded to go up and up and around a mountain on a one lane road.  At the   top we entered the home of our hosts and were speechless at the 360 degree views.

The party was  attended by guests from all over the  world, including a renowned harp player, a couple that had sailed around the world, and a lovely lady that was a fly fishing guide in the islands.  Just prior to midnight we gathered on the terrace for champagne , the count down and a beautiful view of the water, islands, and fireworks below .

A sleepy, happy group rode back to Manana Maybe and all agreed this was the most  awesome and memorable  evening ever.  Welcome 2010!sailing vacation

The remainder  of the trip was filled with great sailing winds, some still days where the water was like glass which made for extra clear  and colorful snorkeling,  an anchorage at Leverick Bay  for shopping, happy hour , a pig barbecue and live entertainment.  The next day we taxied to the Baths, a huge cave created by volcanic boulders.

The Baths are a must see in the BVI, even saw Kelly Ripa (Regis and Kelly fame) and her family.
